You had to beg and whine to have an owner of a tattoo shop to agree to take you on. This might have included a lot of time involved in just hanging out at the shop and making connections, proving you are serious about investing time and you will tackle it as a serious assignment.
I believe both approaches are valid and the idea of tattoo schools does not deserve the criticism it currently gets. There are a lot of people that have to work for a living and taking a course packed with instruction is their only option.
